Atrial fibrillation is prevalent in 9% of the population over 80 years of age and is a growing health concern. Dr Ileana Piña sits down with Dr Bruce Wilkoff, president of the Heart Rhythm Society, for an overview of recent research.

I developed AFib after being on beta-blockers for two years for hypertension. I was both chemically and electrically cardioversed without any success. I stopped the beta-blockers and started treatment for hypothryoidism. My AFib stopped and my QTc has decreased from 503 to 490 ms in 4 weeks.

Can you provide information for me about the electrophysiology. How are KCNQ1 and KCNE1/2 involved?

Thanks.

My questiona are: How many RF "burns" via both Rt/Lft atrium can the heart tolerate before there are too many burns?

When does a pt. who has had multiple Ablations...say two on Rt and full Lft PVI proceedures, all trans catheter, need to consider surgical intervention?

Can an EP tell how much heart muscle has been scarred in the past...say with an EP study?

I would really appreciate a response because I've not been able to find any research or papers addressing this question of "how much, may be too much ablation" !

thank you
