#11: Planes, mains, and flying machines

Feb 14, 2012 10:05 EST

What parallels can we draw between practicing cardiology and piloting airplanes? From exhilaration and human error to aviation safety reports as a guide for bettering practice in the cath lab, Dr Paul Teirstein waxes poetic with Dr Eric Topol about his new passion for flight.

Off topic, I want to make a comment about Geoff Hartzler to you two. First of all, I was a fellow at Mid when Geoff arrived and was very fortunate to work with him and observe the revolution he started. After I completed my fellowship in '81, I returned several times to watch and talk with the staff. I observed Paul working with Geoff and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was clear to me, there was a special relationship in terms of two young cardiologists breaking new, monumental ground and being on the same wave length. My condolences to you Paul on losing Geoff.

Eric, I met you at an ACC meeting in Atlanta when the hotel you and Geoff and I were staying at, caught on fire. It was about 1 am when the alarm went off and as I emerged from a rapid decent down the stairwell with my wife, I found Geoff standing on the street, you wandered over and Geoff introduced you. A very interesting conversation then took place, as you were viewed by the rank and file as a lytic guy, however I remember clearly your excitement about Geoff discussing his primary MI results and urging him to get it published, stat. They put out the fire and we went back to bed, but hearing you and Geoof discuss AMI exactly as it eventually came down several years later was well worth being evacuated for a fire.
