D-dimer: An independent predictor of stroke?

Jul 9, 2010 08:15 EDT

An intriguing set of observations from a small Japanese study points to a possible link between elevated D-dimer levels and thromboembolic and cardiovascular events in patients with atrial fibrillation. Beyond the obvious question of validity, what would be the implications of this new concept to clinical practice?

See:

It seems to me that this would be a great way of motivating and encouraging clinicians to refer patients to oral anticoagulant clinics, and/or targetting their warfarin at higher INRs. At least until we have newer anticoagulants.
