New treatment for superficial vein thrombosis

Feb 11, 2011 13:30 EST

A recent study published in the NEJM provides evidence for the adoption of fondaparinux to treat superficial vein thrombosis that has not improved with conservative therapy.

Will you treat superficial vein thrombosis with fondaparinux?

I have used enoxaparin succesfully in a patient with varicose veins and recurrent superficial vein thromboses that extended alarmingly on NSAIDS. Eventually I found that he was heterozygote for Factor V Leiden. As enoxaparin is now generic and fondaparinux not, I probably will not change my practice.
