#19: The hormonal dilemma: Unraveling an "acute confusional state"

Nov 28, 2012 00:00 EST

Where do things stand with hormone-replacement therapy? Dr Sharon Mulvagh joins Dr Bernard Gersh to shine light on the notoriously complicated data—including the HERS, WHI, KEEPS, and DOPS trials—and show why the trial results are not as contradictory as they might appear.

Drs Gersh and Mulvagh have no relevant financial disclosures.

Great program, but not understanding why after DOPS, Dr. Mulvagh still resists primary prevention at menopause so stridently. Forget hot flashes, so trivial compared to the idea of youth preserving benefits and longevity that seems to be suggested quite strongly. I believe that many menopausal women who took the WHI study so seriously should be angry, it clearly did not apply to them, yet the papers and most women's health advocates shouted it from the rooftops "stop your hormones before they kill". Is anyone feeling a little guilty? Maybe a little dumb?
