A new prospective study provides a snapshot of contemporary hypertension management in Greece, finding that doctors are aggressive in treating high BP, beginning almost half of all new patients on combination pharmacotherapy. However, physician inertia appears to set in during follow-up visits, and action must be taken to tackle this, say the researchers.

An intriguing new hypothesis has emerged from researchers in the Netherlands: people with naturally high levels of creatinine kinase—which includes 50% of blacks and 25% of whites—who are already known to have a higher risk of hypertension than those with low CK levels, appear to have attenuated platelet aggregation and therefore could be at greater risk of bleeding when taking anticoagulants.

Recent data from a cross-sectional study show that patients with hypertension who also suffer from migraine are much more likely to have had a cardiovascular event, particularly a stroke or TIA, than those with high BP alone. These results add to an accumulating body of evidence that indicates migraine could one day be considered a risk factor for stroke, says one expert. He acknowledges, however, that further research is still needed.

UPDATED WITH COMMENTARY // Patients with a history of vascular events have a higher likelihood of developing atrial fibrillation than those in the general population, a new post hoc analysis of the ONTARGET/TRANSCEND studies shows. And those with this history who do develop AF are at higher risk of severe complications than similar patients who remain in sinus rhythm, the data illustrate.
