If the screening process for TAVI turns up severe coronary disease, should that be treated, and if so, when? Or is it worth waiting to see if any chest pain and shortness of breath resolve after the valve is fixed?

The retrospective analysis is based on over 25 374 STEMI patients treated in Sweden between 2005 and 2010. Experts called it "provocative," but not comparable to results from a randomized trial.

CORRECTED // It's long been speculated, but never proven: now a new meta-analysis is offering the first solid proof that drug-eluting stents with bioerodable polymers are associated with less stent thrombosis and better clinical outcomes than stents with permanent polymers.

At a time when arguments over the necessity of stent procedures and imaging tests are reaching a fever pitch, a new computer modeling system that can add functional information to a standard coronary CT angiography may once again shake up the world of diagnostic imaging and clinical decision making.

UPDATED WITH COMMENTARY // After a number of negative trials in stable coronary disease, the RECLOSE 2 ACS study, using light-transmittance aggregometry to assess platelet reactivity, shows that ACS nonresponders to clopidogrel face much higher rates of adverse ischemic events and cardiac death after PCI than responders and that doubling the clopidogrel dose doesn't improve their odds.

A new twist on an old standard is causing ripples at EuroPCR 2011: a new titanium nitride-oxide-coated bare-metal stent has proved to be noninferior to a drug-eluting stent at 12 months.
Hypertension

Interventional cardiologists are mulling the potential new applications for renal denervation, even as they admit that the very limited data supporting the procedure in resistant hypertension need to be replicated in larger outcome studies.
