Dec 4, 2007 14:30 EST / Despite advances in the standard of care for high-risk patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) and evidence-based guidelines recommending antiplatelet agents as the cornerstone of therapy, existing therapies still have considerable limitations. Currently, dual therapy with aspirin and a thienopyridine is the standard of care, but new combinations of antiplatelet agents and new drugs with potent antiplatelet effects, such as AZD6140, cangrelor, and prasugrel, have been evaluated in clinical trials, and these agents may ultimately improve outcomes in patients with ACS. This unique educational symposium will feature an expert faculty leading a highly engaging discussion with the audience on many controversial topics concerning the use of antiplatelet agents in the care of patients with ACS.
Translating TRITON into clinical practice
Nov 28, 2007 09:30 EST / The use of clopidogrel and aspirin is well established in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and those undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, questions still remain regarding clopidogrel efficacy due to its large interpatient variability, which may lead to potentially increased adverse clinical events (myocardial infarction and coronary-stent thrombosis). A novel thienopyridine, prasugrel, has shown less interpatient variability and more potent antiplatelet inhibition. The purpose of this program is to discuss the recent publication of the phase 3 trial involving patients with ACS with scheduled PCI, the Therapeutic Outcomes by Optimizing Platelet Inhibition with Prasugrel-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TRITON-TIMI) 38 trial. However, many patients continue to have recurrent atherothrombotic events while receiving standard dual antiplatelet therapy. The Trial to Assess Improvement in Therapeutic Outcomes by Optimizing Platelet Inhibition with Prasugrel-Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TRITON-TIMI) 38, is a phase 3 trial involving patients with ACS and scheduled PCI, designed to compare a regimen of prasugrel (a potent oral P2Y12 inhibitor) with the standard-dose regimen of clopidogrel.
